2026 National Update on Behavioral Emergencies (NUBE) Conference Call for Speaker Proposals Due July 31, 2026

The American Association for Emergency Psychiatry (AAEP) invites you to submit proposals for our 17th Annual NUBE Conference.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

NUBE is an annual conference focused specifically on management of behavioral emergencies within emergency medicine departments and community crisis settings. The goal of NUBE is two-fold: (1) to create a space in which healthcare providers from multiple disciplines can come together to network and share best practices, and (2) to advance the knowledge of behavioral emergency management.

 

CRITERIA

NUBE presentations are to focus on topics and research in behavioral emergency care. Speaker presentations should be interactive, creative, and dynamic given the mixed conference audience. "Rapid fire" presentations (15-20 minutes) are especially popular for attendees and make up the bulk of the schedule. Attendees should leave with specific educational knowledge and skills in the delivery of psychiatric emergency care. Presentations should refrain from promoting a specific business, product, or service. Below is a list of some recent sample topics. Submissions on other emergency behavioral health topics are also welcome. Subject matter with ** are the most requested year to year and thus, are considered priority topics.

AUDIENCE

The AAEP highly values the interprofessional engagement and collaboration of the multidisciplinary audience who attend NUBE each year. The NUBE audience generally consists of psychiatrists, emergency medicine physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, social workers, psychologists, and trainees. Audience members have a diversity of experience, ranging from early career to expert.

 

SUBMISSIONS

NUBE accepts a variety of speaker proposals – “rapid fire” presentations (1 speaker, 15-20 min), general session (1-2 speakers, 30 min), and panel presentations (up to 4 speakers, 45 min). There are a limited number of general sessions and panel presentations, with preference given to those with audience engagement. Types of presentations may include clinical skills building, quality improvement (QI), case studies, scientific research, or administrative/organizational models of care delivery. NUBE also accepts poster submissions that share original research, quality initiatives, and case study/series.

Trainees of all related disciplines are invited to submit for the trainee poster and will be automatically considered for the Trainee Poster Competition. If selected as one of the top Trainee Submissions, the trainee will be expected to present the work as a brief oral paper (5-7 minutes) at the conference and will receive a prize.

To submit, please provide a 500-word abstract, 3 learning objectives, and requested presenter requirements as outlined below. Submissions for general sessions and panels will be asked to include their plan for audience engagement.

 

PRESENTER REQUIREMENTS

Acceptance of presentations is contingent on all speakers providing all required information (a brief bio, conflict of interest form, headshot, Audio Digest consent form) by the stated deadline. These requests are required for securing continuing education for the program and for conference planning. All accepted submissions must be uploaded in their entirety to the conference website for CE review ahead of the conference (typically 2 weeks before the conference).

 

SELECTION PROCESS

The NUBE program committee blindly scores all submissions as the basis for acceptance. Submissions from clinicians of all backgrounds, including but not limited to race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability and profession are welcomed.

Submissions are scored based on the following:

  1. Is it well-written (clear learning objectives, detailed, clear explanation of how they will use intended time)?
  2. Is this broadly applicable to multiple disciplines/emergency behavioral health settings?  
  3. Is this a priority topic or otherwise current “hot topic”? 
  4. Will this advance the knowledge/practice/operations of emergency behavioral health?  
  5. (For general sessions and panels): Does the proposal outline how the audience will be engaged?
