About the webinar: Join emergency psychiatrist Dr. Sarah Van Remmen and emergency medicine physician Dr. Gregory Jasani for a 1-hour interactive discussion forum on best practices for caring for emergency department patients with comorbid psychiatric illness. The session will begin with a 25-minute case-based presentation on psychiatric boarding, active treatment in the ED, agitation management, focused medical evaluation, pediatric considerations, and safe disposition planning. The final 30 minutes will be dedicated to open discussion and Q&A, with a focus on practical workflows, multidisciplinary collaboration, and real-world challenges in emergency care.

Dr. Sarah Van Remmen received her medical doctorate from the George Washington University, and then completed psychiatric residency at the University of Maryland/Sheppard Pratt Psychiatry Residency Program. She is currently the Medical Director of the UMMC Psychiatric Emergency services and has a career focus on the field of emergency psychiatry. She has a special interest in optimizing systems to provide the best value of care in the most fiscally responsible way, while always placing the patient at the center.  This leads to creativity in identifying areas for improvement and creating new relationships for collaboration.   

Dr Greg Jasani is a board certified emergency medicine physician and an assistant professor of emergency medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He has presented nationally on caring for the boarding patient with psychiatric illness.  When not working, he enjoys coaching his son's tee ball team and spending time with his family.

About the series: This free webinar series is a moderator-led monthly virtual forum for AAEP members to discuss important and interesting topics in the field of Emergency Psychiatry. Webinars are recorded and will be available to members in AAEP's online learning center. 

Webinar format: AAEP webinar moderators will kick off each session with a 15-30 minute introduction to the topic. The remainder of the session time is dedicated to open group discussion, allowing for deeper exploration and exchange of insights.
